Quotes We Live By
“Here is what we have to understand about
your male counterparts. While we may fake
orgasms, they fake finances.
“There is so much wrong with the
present system that we can’t just tinker round the edges, we need to start again; our endpoint
cannot be equality in an unequal world. This is
also the reason why feminism is not struggling to simply reverse the present power relationship and put women in charge instead of men (though this is a common myth about feminist politics).
Feminism is about change, not a changing of the guard. If we are to correct our unbalanced world,
then we need to get rid of patriarchy as a system of social governance.”
“Each time a woman stands up for herself,
without knowing it possibly, without claiming it,
she stands up for all women."
We define and name ourselves publicly as feminists because we celebrate our feminist identities and politics. We recognise that the work of fighting for women’s rights is deeply political, and the process of naming is political too. Choosing to name ourselves feminists places us in a clear ideological position. By naming ourselves as feminists we politicise the struggle for women’s rights, we question the legitimacy of the structures that keep women subjugated, and we develop tools for transformatory analysis and action. We have multiple and varied identities as African feminists. We are African women – we live here in Africa and even when we live elsewhere, our focus is on the lives of African women on the continent. Our feminist identity is not qualified with “ifs”, “buts” or “howevers”. We are Feminists, period.
